Adventurer Beginner's Course ② Departure for the Cockatrice Subjugation Quest

After Shimizu-san introduced Ōta-san to me, she explained to Ōta-san why she had called her.

The woman Shimizu-san called seemed to be named Ōta Mao.

Ōta-san exchanged a few words with Shimizu-san, then asked me a question.

"So, when are we leaving?"

"Anytime is fine."

I always carry my sword, so there's nothing special I need to prepare.

Ōta-san was about to say something to me but was stopped by Shimizu-san.

As I was about to depart, Shimizu-san handed me a sheet of paper to fill out.

As I checked its contents, Shimizu-san explained, adding details.

"This is for writing down the distribution of money earned from the subjugation you're about to undertake."

"Isn't it half and half?"

When I asked that, Shimizu-san looked surprised, and Ōta-san chuckled slightly.

When I looked at Ōta-san, she spoke to me, laughing.

"If I can have half, I'll take it."

"That's fine, please do."

I asked Shimizu-san where I should write.

Then, Shimizu-san puffed out her cheeks and, sounding a bit angry, pointed out to me.

"Satou-kun! Usually, the subjugation party, who do the dangerous work, get 70% or 80%! If it's not like that, we'll only have more people who do the dismantling!"

"I see."

Even when I looked at Ōta-san, she urged me to write it down, saying it was fine.

I dislike dismantling, so I humbly wrote 7 to 3, with me getting the larger share.

After finishing the form, I asked Shimizu-san about the departure time for the bus heading to the field where cockatrices appear.

Surprisingly, it was soon, departing in less than an hour.

Ōta-san said she needed to prepare and headed outside.

I had nothing in particular to do, so I relaxed in the lounge area near the reception desk, waiting.

------------------------------------------------

About an hour from the guild, we arrived at a valley field southwest of Mt. Fuji.

Shimizu-san had said that cockatrices formed flocks here.

After getting off the bus and looking around, I saw Ōta-san taking a cart and other equipment from the bus's cargo area.

When I tried to help, Ōta-san told me it was her job and refused my assistance.

On the bus ride here, she barely spoke even when I tried to initiate conversation.

However, I was able to talk to the bus driver.

This bus is a regular service; it seems to return either at the scheduled time or once everyone who boarded is present.

If there are no people, it waits a bit, but it seems to return in about four hours.

Since it was just Ōta-san and I who came here this time, the microbus was chartered.

(Time to switch gears.)

I had been feeling lighthearted about the new field and going hunting with a professional dismantler for the first time.

From now on, I'll give my all to hunt cockatrices.

Ōta-san, pulling the cart, called out to me as I was looking at the entrance to the valley.

"I'm ready."

"Understood, let's go."

I told Ōta-san that and entered the valley.

Ōta-san, walking behind me, wore relatively light armor, protecting her chest, shins, and arms, rather than full-body armor.

After walking for a while, no cockatrices appeared, so I asked Ōta-san if she knew something.

"Ōta-san, where can we find many cockatrices?"

"There's a large flock over there, which is dangerous, so the opposite direction would be better."

Ōta-san muttered that even hunting one would be a good haul, but I had no such intention.

I started walking toward the direction Ōta-san had called dangerous.

Then, Ōta-san called out to me from behind.

"Hey, did you hear me? It's dangerous over there!"

"It's fine. Let's go."

Ōta-san held her head and followed me, saying, "Oh, come on!"

(Maybe she's a surprisingly good person.)

As I walked, thinking that, a group of cockatrices began to appear before my eyes.

Ōta-san quietly spoke to me so as not to alert the cockatrices.

"Look, look... there are so many cockatrices. Let's turn back."

I couldn't respond to Ōta-san's words.

Looking around, I could confirm about 40 huge white birds.

"Ōta-san, please wait here."

Unable to suppress my excitement, I dashed toward the cockatrices.

Ōta-san didn't say anything, perhaps not understanding what was happening.

I applied physical ability enhancement, movement speed enhancement, and attack speed enhancement to myself and charged head-on into the cockatrices.

The first cockatrice noticed me, but before it could cry out, I thrust my sword with all my might into its heart.

When I pulled out the sword, the cockatrice let out a groan and collapsed on the spot.

Even though slightly hindered by the tough chest muscles, I put all my propulsion into the sword, successfully defeating the cockatrice with a single thrust.

When fighting a cockatrice, it's difficult for attacks to land because its skin is covered in feathers.

However, by aiming for the gap in the chest muscles and piercing the heart, you can defeat them like this.

As I confirmed its collapse, the surrounding cockatrices cried out.

When their cries echoed through the valley, the cockatrices as far as the eye could see began to gather and move toward me.

I gripped my sword tighter and prepared to meet the flock of cockatrices.
