Adventurer Beginner's Course ① To the Adventurer's Guild

After returning home with my mother, I'm now heading to the Adventurer's Guild in Shizuoka Prefecture, armed with the letter of recommendation I received from the principal.

Since the Adventurer's Guild is located within the Shizuoka Prefectural Office, I took the train to the second district where the prefectural office is situated.

Upon entering the prefectural office, I found a receptionist who directed me to the Adventurer's Guild. I was told the Adventurer's Guild was in a building adjacent to the prefectural office, so I exited and walked in the direction I was shown.

As I walked around the prefectural office, a two-story building came into view. A large sign above the entrance of the building read [Shizuoka Prefecture Adventurer's Guild]. Upon entering, unlike the prefectural office reception, I was greeted with a smile.

"Welcome to the Adventurer's Guild! How may I help you?"

"Excuse me, could you please take this?"

Saying that, I handed the letter of recommendation to the cheerful receptionist. She confirmed what I had given her, then said, "Please wait a moment," and went to the back.

While waiting at the reception counter, I looked around and saw many people watching me with interest. However, no one came over; they simply observed. Bored, I leaned on the counter, waiting, when an elderly man with a white beard appeared from the back. The elderly man looked at me with a suspicious gaze. When he suddenly stared at me, I wondered what was going on, and then the elderly man spoke.

"Are you Satou Kazuya-kun?"

"Yes, that's right."

"Let's talk in the back."

He told me to come to the back, so I went behind the counter and followed the elderly man. After walking for a while, he told me to enter a room, and inside, the receptionist from earlier was also there. The elderly man sat in a chair next to the receptionist, and then prompted me to sit opposite him across the table.

The elderly man leaned his elbows on the table, staring intently at me.

"Is something wrong?"

"No, I just can't believe a child like you possesses three skills."

The receptionist was surprised by the elderly man's words. I didn't particularly mind and stated the purpose of my visit.

"I heard that if I hand in this letter of recommendation here, I can become an adventurer."

"That's right, ordinarily you can."

"Ordinarily?"

The elderly man folded his arms as if thinking and spoke to me.

"I work here as the Guild Master, but it's the first time a child like you wants to become an adventurer."

"It's the first time?"

"Yes. That's why I'd like to give you a test. I'm hesitant to simply trust that letter of recommendation."

"A test... I understand."

Hearing my reply, the Guild Master told the receptionist next to him to introduce me to a quest. The receptionist said, "Then, please come this way," and led me back to the previous counter. After a small cough, she cheerfully introduced herself.

"I'm Shimizu Harumi, your point person for today. Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too."

Shimizu-san then said, "Alright," and displayed a list of quests on the computer screen facing us. I stared at the displayed screen.

(It kind of reminds me of a game.)

As I was thinking that, Shimizu-san looked at me with a troubled expression.

"Is there anything you think you can do?"

Perhaps thinking I looked troubled, Shimizu-san asked anxiously. Among them, I chose the most enjoyable-looking quest.

[Cockatrice Subjugation]

Cockatrices are bird-type monsters, with the head to the legs resembling a rooster, and a snake-like tail. Their size ranges from two to three meters, and all individuals are large and very ferocious in nature. Shimizu-san, perhaps not expecting me to choose the Cockatrice subjugation quest, asked me in a loud voice.

"C-Cockatrice subjugation?! Are you really sure?!"

"It's fine. Please proceed."

"Understood. What about dismantling?"

"What do you mean? Is just defeating it not enough?"

Shimizu-san said, "Um, well," looking troubled, and explained to me.

"Cockatrice meat is popular, so we'd be happy if you could dismantle it and bring it back after hunting it."

"I don't really like dismantling, though..."

"In that case, there's also the option of hiring a dismantling specialist!"

"Please do that."

Hearing my words, Shimizu-san smiled and replied, then started calling out to someone on the floor.

"Ōta-san~! Could you come here for a moment?!"

I looked in the direction Shimizu-san had called, and a woman with a somewhat sulky expression was heading towards us. The woman was a little taller than me and had a slender build and short hair.

"Haru-chan, what's with the sudden call?"

The woman called Ōta spoke to Shimizu-san as soon as she reached the counter.
